Résumé/abstract:
Remote, or online, laboratories allow for physical experiments to be accessed by an individual remotely using the Internet rather than the individual being physically in the same location at the experiment. A suitably designed user interface, such as a Web page, allows the user to interact with the experiment via a computer visual interface. Over the last number of years, remote laboratories have been developed for education purposes and integrated into the curriculum as part of distance based learning initiatives. Today, a remote laboratory may be seen as an Internet of Things (IoT) service. The educational uses of the remote laboratory can be useful in some, but not all, teaching and learning scenarios. In this presentation, the idea of the remote laboratory will be presented, the uses of the remote laboratory discussed and some of the technical challenges identified. Example remote laboratories and additional information sources will also be identified. Different uses of the remote laboratory, including the potential use as an assistive technology to promote inclusion in education, will be identified.

About Ian Grout …
Ian Grout is a lecturer within the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering in the University of Limerick, Ireland. His teaching areas include microelectronic circuit design and test and design using FPGAs. His research interests include remote laboratories, sensor system design using programmable logic devices, teaching technology and microelectronic circuit design and test. His is currently visiting the Hanoi University of Science and Technology for one month on an Erasmus Mundus Lotus Unlimited staff mobility.
